A SHINING STAR
By Hazel Keller Kittelberger
June 21, 1912 must have been an enchanted day, because a very special person was born. His name never became a household word, but those who knew him found him to be a sweet and gentle man; well liked by all, and always ready to lend a helping hand, with an easy smile that brought a twinkle to his eyes.
His formal education did not extend beyond the eighth grade, but his knowledge of nature, wildlife, astronomy, and most everything was vast. He had an aptitude for mathematics, and continued throughout his life to educate himself. He could install plumbing, do electrical wiring, put a roof on a house, or build a porch. He could take a piece of wood and carve it into a lovely bird.
This man could dry a tear and soothe a hurt with his "twinkly" smile, or by playing his beloved cowboy songs on his harmonica.
In his earlier years he dreamed of becoming a merchant marine or an U. S. navy man. He also longed to be a cowboy, so much so that he headed west from New Jersey, going as far as Philadelphia before turning back for home----his dreams remained unfulfilled; instead, he married the love of his life, and devoted himself to family.
What you saw was what he truly was---a totally honest and above board man.
On June 24, 1998, this shining star dimmed and left us. Arnold was his name, some called him Arnie---I called him MY DAD.
It's darker now since this star burned out, but his gentle love will shine forever in my heart.
